Energy Transition Initiative Japan
The The Energy Transition Initiative – Centre for Global Commons (ETI-CGC) was formed in 2021 at COP26, between select Japanese companies and Center for Global Commons at the University of Tokyo. The ETI-CGC serves as a platform for industry and academia to collaborate in developing pathways for Japan to achieve decarbonization. The platform is working independently from the ETC while fostering close collaboration with its extensive network and shared objectives. Corporate members in the platform include leading Japanese companies from the Energy, Materials, Transport, Finance, Building, Trading, Technology and Industrial Products industries.

ETI-CGC’s principles
ETI-CGC operates under the following five principles:
- Safeguard the sustainability of our environment, the Global Commons by developing pathways to reduce Japan’s greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050.
- Leverage scientific insights and findings from Japan and around the world to explore pathways that align with local circumstances to achieve carbon neutrality, while maintaining well-being and wealth.
- Showcase these pathways as a global model case for countries with unique local circumstances and subsequently make contributions to global carbon neutrality.
- View the implementation of the pathways as an opportunity to transform Japan’s industrial structure and economic/social system as well as our behavioral pattern towards the future. Discussions will focus on ways to maximize this transformative potential.
- Propose policies and take a leadership role in fostering discussions and driving actionable solutions.
